Oil Safety

Essential oils can be used in three ways: aromatically, topically or orally. Within each of these methods, there is a wide range of effective methods of application that you can use. For example, you can add them to a bath, massage them into your body or add them to body spray.

Always apply the “more is less” rule of thumb when it comes to these powerful plant medicines. They are extremely potent, so a little goes a long way. We suggest that you start small with one to two drops, and slowly increase the dosage to the recommended amount. It’s also a good idea to use several small doses throughout the day, rather than a single large dose.

Always follow the instructions provided on the label.

When trying an oil for the first time it is advisable to use a carrier oil, such as Fractionated Coconut Oil. We also recommend that you dilute your oils when using with young or sensitive skin. The recommend dilution ratio is typically one drop of essential oil to three drops of carrier oil.

What about essential oils and going out into the sun?

Certain oils (mainly citrus oils) can react with sunlight when applied directly to the skin and then exposed to direct UV rays. It’s important to note, these oils do not cause problems EXCEPT when used topically on skin that will have exposure to UV rays. They can be safely used internally or on skin that will be covered.
These oils should always be well diluted or applied to an area that is not exposed to the sun. Alternatively, you should wait 24 hours before going out into the sun.

What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation?

If discomfort or irritation occurs, immediately stop using the essential oil and apply some fractionate coconut oil to the affected area. Never use water in an attempt to flush the oil off the skin, as this may increase the level of discomfort.
